Construction resumes May 2 on Highway 59
We have a start date! Construction will resume in Pelican Rapids on Friday, May 2, weather permitting!
Crews will begin on Highway 59, between Fifth Avenue NE and Eighth Avenue NW, Stage 2B of the project. The work in Stage 2B will be completed one lane at a time, with an automated traffic signal to direct traffic through the work zone.
Your patience is important. Motorists should expect to stop at the automated signal, and wait until the light turns green before proceeding. Traffic will flow one direction at a time, so if entering in the middle of the work zone, please follow the correct direction of traffic. Even during off-hours, when crews aren’t present and traffic volumes are low, please obey the signal lights.

In a few weeks, crews will also resume work on Highway 108 east, finishing where they stopped last year in Stage 4A extending into Stage 4B, between 2 ½ Street and Sixth Street. During this work, Highway 108 east will close in this section, with an in-town detour on local roads to navigate around construction.
Thank you for your patience as everyone gets used to the new traffic patterns during construction!
Additional staging and traffic impacts will occur as construction progresses (we’ll share those changes before they happen), and overall construction is expected to wrap up in October 2025.
Important reminders
- Downtown bridge work starts: Bridge crews will return April 28 to finish up some work at the bridge downtown over the Pelican River. No traffic impacts are anticipated, but there are parking and sidewalk restrictions on the east side of the bridge for their work.
- Businesses remain open during road construction: Access will be maintained to both businesses and residences, but entrances may change or shift as utility replacements and concrete work are underway. How you enter or exit may vary depending on where crews are working, and you may need to park and walk up to some locations. Please check in with your destination to determine the best way to get to them.
- Join us for in-person updates on Thursdays: Starting May 1, MnDOT and Landwehr Construction, Inc., the prime contractor, will resume weekly in-person construction updates at the Pelican Rapids Public Library at noon on Thursdays. These meetings will continue weekly on Thursdays during construction, based on consistent interest and attendance.
- Thru-traffic and trucks: For those who don’t have a destination in Pelican Rapids, the signed thru-traffic/truck routes outside of town will still be an option. Expect delays in Pelican Rapids during peak travel times.
Staying informed
Signing up for this project email list is just one way to stay informed during construction. There are several different ways you can find information or get your questions answered:
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones where workers are present, and never enter an area that’s blocked by barriers or cones.
